The narrow crevice looks like an open wound on the rough and wrinkled skin of an enormous dinosaur. Inside, an uninterrupted flow of ruby-coloured lava runs between puffs of stinky steam, then channels into a tunnel of rock and disappears from view (...). The heat is unbearable and forces us to keep a distance, even if the spectacle has something very hypnotic: we cannot take off our eyes from that thick and glowing fluid which comes from the guts of the earth. (...) I am together with Luciano Gaudenzio and other friends, we are on the Etna, at more than 3000 metres, in front of this eruptive mouth in full activity, a unique spectacle, which brings us to the beginning of Earth, fascinating and scary, as nature knows how to be when it decides to show its unimaginable force.
