Abetina di Rosello and Cascate del Verde: wild treasures of the Sannio di Bruno D'Amicis
On the border between Abruzzo and Molise, in the provinces of Chieti and Isernia, you find one of the most interesting forests of Italy. L’Abetina di Rosello and the adjacent forest of Pescopennataro conserve an almost intact strip of mixed forest of white spruce, maple trees (among which the very rare Lobel maple tree), beech and other species. Here Italy’s two highest trees were found, each reaching over 50 meters in height. The oasis which protects the Abetina is crossed by a deep gorge cut out by the Turcano river, and protects also numerous animal species, like the wolf, the wild cat, the black woodpecker and the spectacled salamander. The wonderful Verde river, on the other hand, near the village Borrello, forms the waterfalls with the same name which, with three long jumps, are the highest of Italy.
